What is a good web hosting company to use?

A common problem:

Other people have asked this, but I haven’t been happy with the answers. Any help would be very much appreciated on this. There is so much marketing junk out there I can’t tell the good companies from the bad. So I’m looking for suggestions.

I need to host a web site. Here is what I need:
1. Scalability. I want to start small and grow, so it will have to be a company with a wide range of "service plans."

2. Trust. I don’t want a company that offers free domain registration. I don’t trust it, and it seems like a scam to me. They register the domain, they own it. I already own my domain. I don’t trust a company that wants to own other’s domains. Likewise, I don’t trust a company that puts emphasis on things like the number of e-mail addresses they offer. "Now with 5000 e-mail addresses!" looks like a distraction to me.

3. Reliable and affordable almost go without saying. But I’d be willing to pay a little more for better service.

4. Freedom to advertise. I noticed some hosting companies have restrictions on what kind of advertising you can have on a site. I want to be able to put whatever kind of advertising I want on my own site.

JT, I’ll check them out and see what other’s say as well. The immediate red flag for me with netfirms is the "free domain registration."

  1. Almost everyone is offering a free domain, because their competition does it, so it’s a nice selling point. But of course you don’t have to use it. I use Namecheap for my domain names.

    If you’re willing to pay $20+/monthly for a web host I recommend:

    1. Register your domain with a 3rd party (like Namecheap)
    2. Buy hosting with Dreamhost, but choose the monthly payment option. ($10.95/month + $49.95 setup fee)

    4. Point your domain name to Dreamhost dns servers
    5. This way you get cheap hosting, but with no long term contract, so you can cancel at any time and switch to another host if you feel you need more resources.

    P.P.S. I’ve been using Dreamhost for over 2 years, hosting over 20 sites with them, and they’ve been great so far, but it’s nice to keep your options open.

  2. I think Freewebs.com is the place for you. Many companies use it to host their websites because the general look is professional and it is very simple. You can easily upload blogs, pictures and videos and you can choose your very own design for your page. There also is a guest book where visitors, viewers etc can leave a note for you.

    I was tired of letting my business and clan in the hands of places like godaddy, hostgator, dreamhost. I looked and looked and I found Phynom Technologies.
