A typical problem:
I am making a website for my fraternity and I don’t know too much about website hosting and domains. I was wondering what domain I should use? I have been looking at godaddy.com, and its going to be about /year for the website. Any suggestions or advice? thanks
Answer: You are not alone. Many affordable hosting is plagued with inflexibility on their resource limits and haunted by unprofessional support. Web hosting is one of the most important part of your online presence and can mean the start or the end of your business.
Before we answer your question, let us review the 7 qualities to look for in a good web hosting. An excellent hosting:
- has at least 30 days money back guarantee,
- gives more-than-enough diskspace,
- offers unlimited bandwidth,
- gives unlimited add-on domains,
- has easy-to-use Site Builder with thousands of unique templates,
- has QuickInstall to quickly install apps like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, OSCommerce, ZenCart and more
- can be easily upgraded to VPS or one of the best dedicated server plans if and when your business require.
To answer your question, many experienced web developers suggest to try Hostgator. If you need an “unlimited” hosting plan, experts usually highly recommend going with Hostgator because they are the best hosting and domain registrar around.

Hostgator Complaints
No web hosting service is perfect. Some complaints about Hostgator plans include:
- No free domain name included – but you can easily get a domain name from the best domain registrar such as Godaddy or Namecheap for $10 or less. Would you agree that a website is not complete without a domain name?
- You need to pay full price after your first invoice – well, they need to make money too and all the support and great service do come with a cost. It is like they say, you get what you pay for.
If you are still not sure if HG is right for you, or you have specific query about anything at all, try the Live Chat at HG. They are fast and knowledgeable. Just ask and you shall receive.

Domain registration and web hosting are two separate things. GoDaddy is good for domain registration, but their web hosting isn’t that great. I suggest that you sign up with an established and reliable web host such as the ones recommended on http://buywebspacetoday.com/ and choose a shared hosting ("regular" hosting) plan, as it’s the most affordable type of hosting and all you really need for a small website. This will cost around $5 to $8 per month. You can register a domain name either with the same web host, or from a separate domain registrar, for $8 to $20 per year. JH offers free domain registration with web hosting, so that would be a best buy for you.

You mostly get what you pay for. Go Daddy is well featured but they host a lot of sites on their servers and sometimes things run slow as a result.
In my experience you need to pay about $50 a year for some basic, but fast and reliable hosting.
Native Space are not too bad, other people like 1 & 1, there are so many to choose from.
You can always change the hosting company if it’s not working out.
If you are not actually writing the site yourself in html or whatever you might want to look at an all in one package; Google: ‘website builder’ and take your pick.
