A typical problem:
I recently started to develop web sites for local business. However, hosting is expensive and I also would like to keep it affordable for clients. I was thinking that a better alternative since I don’t have a server, would be to use my domain since it has unlimited unlimited space to host my client’s web sites. So I’d just have to buy the domain and host everything in my domain.
Are there any disadvantages? What would be better alternatives if any? I appreciate any suggestions, thanks.
Answer: You are not alone. Many affordable hosting is plagued with inflexibility on their resource limits and haunted by unprofessional support. Web hosting is one of the most important part of your business and can mean the life or death to your business.
To answer your query, here are 7 qualities to look for in a good web hosting. An excellent hosting:
- lets you try their service for free or at very low price,
- gives more-than-enough webspace,
- offers no limit on bandwidth,
- gives multiple add-on domains,
- has friendly Site Builder with thousands of unique templates,
- has QuickInstall to quickly install apps like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, OSCommerce, ZenCart and more
- can be easily upgraded to VPS or one of the best dedicated server plans if and when your business require.

Hostgator Complaints
No web hosting service is perfect. Some complaints about Hostgator plans include:
- No free domain name included – but you can easily get a domain name from the best domain registrar such as Godaddy or Namecheap for $10 or less. Would you agree that a website is not complete without a domain name?
- You need to pay full price after your first invoice – well, they need to make money too and all the support and great service do come with a cost. It is like they say, you get what you pay for.

I use winninghosting.com for this exact thing. They have a gold plan that allows you to host a ton of sites all with their own domain names. So I pay for one account but I have 18 different sites all with separate domains and databases. It’s pretty cool and I’ve never had a problem. Also watch out for companies that say unlimited because it’s never true. They limit your usage in the fine print in their terms of service. I found this out the hard way.

Not a good idea as you will quickly exceed your allowable bandwidth once you have a few good clients. Are you going to take the responsibility when site goes down since you don’t own the servers or backup equipment. Lots of other things you need to look at.

One disadvantage is that if your host goes down, ALL your clients will blame you.
Second, your hosting provider may not be too happy that you’re running so many sites, and could charge you more, etc… anyways
Lastly, businesses should know the expense of web hosting, and be prepared to pay for it if they want a web presence.
Alternatively, you could host on your current provider as well as your own computer as a backup webserver just in case it goes down there’s something.
