  1. If you want your own domain name (like http://www.JOHNSMITH.COM) then you need to license it from what they call a domain name registrar.

    Which one depends on what kind of domain you want: .COM, .BIZ, .UK, etc. For example, if you want a .COM or .NET domain, you can see a list of registrars at: http://www.verisign.com/information-services/naming-services/com-net-registry/page_002166.html

    But I know that’s waaayyy to many to look at. So two of the bigger well-known ones are:
    http://www.godaddy.com
    http://www.register.com

    Both of them have web tools so that you can see if the name that you want is already taken, and can suggest alternative similar names that are not taken.

    The cost these days is quite affordable for registering the domain name. Then it’s up to you to find a web host (a company that runs a server on which you put your HTML pages). But both register and godaddy will do that too.
