My web host provider are recovering from a disk failure. They are currently restoring the entire server from a backup, and claim it will take 24 hours or more. The server that hosts my web pages (and probably many others) will then have been offline for more than 36 hours.

That is definitely unacceptable.. you are paying to have your site online.. for them to have that kind of massive interruption is really just not reliable or professional. Most reputable hosts have backups and backup servers ready to go… people depend on their websites afterall to make money.

yes, that sounds about right. it depends on the amount of data that needs to be transferred. try copying all your files from a 3/4 full 750GB hard drive to another 750GB and you’ll understand. it’s murphy’s law. i hope you did routine backups. my recommendation is to ask for them to give you credit for a few months free to compensate for that downtime. read the fine print about their uptime policy.
if your website is your livelihood consider running your own webserver or running off a vps. it’s risky sharing resources on a packed server with hundreds of other shared web hosting accounts.
Equipment failure happens, but there should have been a redundancy in place (mirror image). If you change your host, how are you going to get your files off the now defunct server? Do you have a backup of all the files, databases, emails, etc? Don’t cancel your current hosting until AFTER you get a new account set up and everything is working.
