If not, how do I find out which are? Know of any good and affordable ones?
Thanks!
Unix or Windows running host with php4 (+ "domxml" extension)/php5 (+ "dom" extension) support
Thanks Michael. Is php 5 and php 5 plus dom support the same thing?
Answer: Warning! Using unreliable cheap hosting can leave you devastated when your hard work disappear without warning. Web hosting is the heart of your web presence and can mean the success and failure for your business.
Before we give you an absolute answer, these are seven qualities to look for in a good web hosting. An excellent hosting:
- has excellent support and rated at least A+ by Better Business Bureau (BBB),
- gives more-than-enough storage,
- offers no limit on bandwidth,
- gives unlimited add-on domains,
- has friendly Site Builder with thousands of unique templates,
- has QuickInstall to quickly install apps like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, OSCommerce, ZenCart and more
- can be easily upgraded to VPS or one of the best dedicated server plans if and when your business require.

Hostgator Complaints
No web hosting service is perfect. Some complaints about Hostgator plans include:
- No free domain name included – but you can easily get a domain name from the best domain registrar such as Godaddy or Namecheap for $10 or less. Would you agree that a website is not complete without a domain name?
- You need to pay full price after your first invoice – well, they need to make money too and all the support and great service do come with a cost. It is like they say, you get what you pay for.
If you are still not sure if HG is right for you, or you have specific query about anything at all, try the Live Chat at HG. They are fast and knowledgeable. Just ask and you shall receive.

I use Bluehost, which is a little more expensive, but well worth it in my opinion. They permit SSH access to the web servers, so you can install software that isn’t typical web server stuff, as long as it runs on linux.

I like that there’s no disk space or bandwidth limit in either direction, so I never have to worry about that kind of thing.
ADDED:
Just about everything will run php5 nowadays. The things that you can’t assume you will get are things like
* The ability to set up cron jobs (scripts that you want to run on a schedule, automatically)
* The ability to use "clean URLs" (i.e., http://www.mysite.com/page15 is nicer than http://www.mysite.com/?q=page&num=15 )
* A large number of MySQL databases. Some hosting companies will let you make only 5, and I find this annoying,
* A phone number to call for support, not just live chat
* Free subdomains (i.e., http://www.mysite.com and http://email.mysite.com)
ADDED:
The DOM (Document Object Model) capability you’re talking about is part of php.

Most are, and some make it easy to install by offering one click install.
I recommend one of these: http://www.hosttell.com/
Powweb has the best offer right now. It’s on a 50% sale – $3.88/month ($46.56/year), and you get a free domain from them.

Virtually all linux based hosts will run php, and most of those will run php5. The dom modules are part of the php5 core so they should be available as long as the host supports php5.
http://hostingscorecard.com/PhpS-1.html has ratings of 58 php hosts based on a minimum of 1000 user reviews and comments over the last 6 months.
http://hostingscorecard.com/SharedLSu5-1.html rates 21 webhosts that offer linux hosting for under $5 per month, virtually all will offer php5.

Yes they are all. You should consider going to a website like http://www.hostgumbo.com … they have an up to date pricing and features comparison chart for the top 2009 web hosts. The site is free to use and they also run really cool promotions and giveaways. I got a free iTunes gift certificate and highly recommend them.
